Sesilio Lopez Jr. may have escaped a death sentence but he was not as lucky with the fury of a grieving mother.
Sheri Pennington sat across from Lopez on Tuesday in the 140th District Court and told the 31-year-old man she had come face to face with evil.
Lopez was sentenced to life in prison for the Dec. 26, 2011, shooting death of David Rowser during a robbery at the One Guy From Italy restaurant on 50th Street.
Lopez, a father of three, will be eligible for parole after serving at least 30 years of his sentence.
An attorney in a local case of negligence, in which a man died in a motel room, wanted to make a national impact on hotel safety, but his case ended with a settlement.
Last January, 59-year-old Harold Rutherford was found dead in a room in the Budget Motel, 805 34th St., according to A-J Media files.
The room Rutherford was staying in was determined to have high levels of carbon monoxide in the air, according to A-J Media files, and the plaintiff, Latiesha Renee Ruth, lapsed into unconsciousness in her room before being treated at the University Medical Center.
One person was arrested Monday accused of assaulting a police officer by dragging the officer with a vehicle, Lubbock police said Tuesday.

Goswick from the burglary suppression unit conducted a traffic stop around 4:13 p.m. Monday on a Saturn Vue, and during the stop a female acquaintance of the driver approached the passenger side of the vehicle and got in the car but did not close the door, according to a statement from Lt. Ray Mendoza.

A 36-year-old Lubbock police officer is on paid administrative leave after he was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of paying a prostitute for sex and using his status as an officer to extort sex and cover up a crime.
Lubbock police arrested Dustin Wayne Hatley, an eight-year veteran of the police force, as he exited a flight at Lubbock Preston Smith International Airport, according to a news release Wednesday by the Lubbock Police Department.
He was booked into the Lubbock County Detention Center on misdemeanor charges of prostitution and official oppression.
Tech police investigate reported sex assault
Texas Tech police are giving a notice of a sexual assault that reportedly happened Feb. 15 at 2:19 a.m., according to a statement by the department.
Reportedly, the incident occurred in a vehicle in the R2 parking lot near Murray Residence Hall, when a female student was assaulted by a male that provided her transportation from an off-campus bar to her dorm, according to the statement.
