A warning sign posted in front of Will Sedberry Park near Eighth Street and Guava Avenue left an East Lubbock woman with questions Thursday morning.

The sign, white with red lettering, waved in the wind as it stood on two metal stakes. In bold print, the sign read, “DANGER/PELIGRO” along with the numbers for emergency spill and poison control.

For 56-year-old Shelia Ruth, she said the sign caused her great concern since the park is located a few feet from her house where three of her grandchildren are spending the summer.

The State Fire Marshal’s Office is assisting Levelland’s fire department in investigating two Monday morning fires believed to be cases of arson.

Levelland Fire Marshal Jay McKay said both scenes showed obvious signs of arson — multiple points of ignition and grass clippings used as fuel — however, a K9 unit did not detect any use of accelerants at the fires on North Houston Street and Tenth Street.

Both structures were vacant at the time of the fires, and no injuries were reported.
