Dollar store employee indicted on theft charge, accused of allowing friends to take merchandise

A former employee of Dollar General in Wolfforth was indicted by a grand jury this week after he was charged with letting his friends have a five-finger discount.

Christopher Ybarra, 43, was arrested by Wolfforth Police on Oct. 9. and on Tuesday was indicted on a charge of theft between $1,500 and $20,000 and possession of cocaine.

According to a police report, police were called to Dollar General to meet with the regional loss prevention manager, Kelly Campbell.

The defense attorney in a federal child pornography case eight years ago said he was willing to let his client’s wife testify, even though he had doubts that she would have helped his case.

Mark Snodgrass was the last government witness to appear in a hearing into a complaint from Ricky Lynn Cole that Snodgrass provided ineffective representation at trial by failing to object alleged harassment of Cole’s wife, Tina Cox-Cole, a defense witness in the trial.

Two armed robberies under investigation

Lubbock police are investigating a pair of aggravated robberies that happened in a relatively short timespan overnight Thursday, Nov. 21, and Friday, Nov. 22, and possibly involve the same perpetrator, according to Lubbock police.

At 2 a.m. Friday, Lubbock police responded to a robbery call at the 7-11 in the 2500 block of 34th Street, according to police spokesman Sgt. Jason Lewis.

Three plead guilty in federal court to roles in September methamphetamine bust

Two men arrested in a midtown house two months ago during a Lubbock police methamphetamine investigation pleaded guilty to a top-line federal drug charge Thursday, Nov. 21.

Michael Armenta, 20, and Fernando Valenzuela Ceballos, 26, each pleaded guilty to one count of possession with intent of more than 500 grams of methamphetamine.

Armenta’s wife, 19-year-old Kutleza Aurora Rodriguez, also pleaded guilty to one count of misprision of a felony — someone with knowledge of a crime failing to promptly tell a police officer or other official what they know.

Charles Fife clung tightly to the string of his balloon.

His mother, Toni, held him just as tightly.

Before Judge Kevin Hart, Toni Fife raised her right hand on Friday, Nov. 22, and swore she would nurture and care for the 2-year-old in her arms.

Toni Fife has already adopted four children. Charlie was the last.

“You are now five,” said Hart as he granted the adoption.

Nearly a dozen families were expanded in the same way in two Lubbock County court rooms as county adoption officials celebrated National Adoption Day for the ninth year.

Man gets two years in identity theft plea

A Lancaster, Calif., man will spend two years in federal prison for trying in April to use false identification documents to loot another man’s bank account.

Auston Chad Cohen, 29, received the sentence Thursday, Nov. 21, from U.S. District Judge Sam R. Cummings.

Cummings ordered him to spend a year on supervised release after he finishes his sentence.

Cohen also must pay $27,800 in restitution to Wells Fargo Bank.

Two years is the maximum federal sentence for aggravated identity theft.

Grand jury indicts Bippus in Oak Creek Apartments blaze that displaced 70

A Lubbock County grand jury on Tuesday, Nov. 26, indicted a Lubbock man for a Labor Day fire that gutted part of an apartment complex and left nearly 70 people homeless.

Michael George Bippus, 19, was charged with arson of a habitation.

Bippus has been in jail since his arrest Sept. 2 at the Oak Creek Apartments in the 5800 block of 22nd Street. His bail has been set at $100,000.

Lubbock Fire Rescue officials said at the time Bippus admitted starting the fire, which destroyed 32 apartments.

There were no injuries; one person was treated for smoke inhalation.
