Police release image of suspect in Whataburger robbery

Lubbock police recently released images of a suspect in the robbery of a local Whataburger.

Police are attempting to locate a black male who they said demanded money from a cashier at the Whataburger in the 1700 block of 19th Street about 1 a.m. Wednesday.

The suspect is described as about 6 feet tall, weighing between 150 and 170 pounds. At the time of the robbery, he was wearing a blue plaid hoodie, black pants and black shoes. He has facial hair, possibly a mustache or beard.

The suspect had a gun and fled the scene on foot.

Police release images of suspects in Lubbock 7-11 robberies

Lubbock police on Friday released images of suspects in two separate robberies last weekend.

The first robbery occurred about 2 a.m. Sunday at a 7-11 in the 2100 block of 50th Street in Lubbock.

Police previously said four black men and one black woman entered the store.

One of the suspects pointed a handgun at the store clerk while the other suspects took money from the register and alcoholic beverages from displays. Police said suspects possibly left in a white Nissan Frontier pickup.

Roberts challenges guilty plea; team suggests no seat belt, not intoxication, killed victim

Jeena Elizabeth Roberts is back in a Lubbock jail in hopes of backing out of her guilty plea for intoxicated manslaughter in 2012.

The 25-year-old Texas Tech graduate, serving a 15-year combined sentence that also includes a conviction for bail jumping, argues her previous legal counsel did a poor job representing her following the 2010 crash that left one woman dead and another injured, according to Lubbock County court records.

Lubbock police release images of suspects in credit card abuse

The Lubbock Police Department released new images Saturday of suspects wanted for credit card abuse.

A Hispanic man with tattoos and two Hispanic women made several purchases from different stores on Nov. 1 using a stolen credit card, according to police.

Officials released surveillance camera images of the suspects, who made purchases at Black Diamond Gifts in the 2300 block of 34th Street and Walmart in the 1900 block of Marsha Sharp Freeway.

Anyone with information about the suspects should call Detective Pringle at 775-2775 or Crime Line at 741-1000.


Fatal accident marks 10th pedestrian death of the year

Lubbock police are investigating after a pedestrian was killed early Sunday morning.

Samantha Jean Close, 23, was struck by a white Lexus passenger car traveling eastbound on the access road in the 4800 block of North Loop 289 about 4:20 a.m. Sunday, according to the Lubbock Police Department.

Medical personnel pronounced Close dead at scene. She is the 10th pedestrian killed by a vehicle this year.

The driver of the Lexus, Awet Habte Finas, 23, also sustained moderate injures.

Drugs or alcohol were not involved in the incident, according to an accident report.

Most police shootings don't end with prosecutions

WASHINGTON — A Missouri grand jury's decision to spare police officer Darren Wilson from criminal charges is the latest in a long line of police shooting investigations that show the latitude afforded law enforcement in using deadly force.

The question for the panel that decided the case was never whether Wilson fatally shot 18-year-old Michael Brown, but rather whether the Aug. 9 killing constituted a crime. In declining to indict Wilson, the grand jury followed laws and court precedents to reach a conclusion that is far more the norm than the exception.

LANGHORNE, Pa. (AP) — Police outside Philadelphia say they found a man sleeping in a school hallway with a glass smoking pipe and a bag of synthetic marijuana marked "Scooby Snax."

The Bucks County Courier Times reports (http://bit.ly/1ybRAH6) police discovered John-Paul Sabara inside the Tawanka Learning Center in Lower Southampton around 3:20 a.m. Monday after spotting a bicycle parked outside the building.

Prosecutor: Lawyer had sex with captive girl, 14

PHILADELPHIA — A Philadelphia lawyer was charged Tuesday with patronizing a sex-trafficking ring that held a missing 14-year-old girl captive and sent her to his downtown office to have sex with him.

The girl was held captive just blocks from her Philadelphia home in March 2012 and sometimes hired out 20 times a week, District Attorney Seth Williams said at a press conference. She was "sold" a month later to another pimp in Camden, New Jersey, before she turned up in Georgia that summer as a potential sex trafficking victim, a grand jury report said.

Lubbock County Sheriff's Office reporting problem with telephones

Lubbock County Sheriff’s officials have provided alternate phone numbers to non-emergency departments.

The sheriff’s office is experiencing failures with phone numbers with a 775 prefix, according to a news release.

The failure affects the office’s communication and detention centers.

The 911 emergency number is not affected by the issues, according to the release.

To reach the Detention Center while repairs are made residents should call 806-790-8353, 806-407-8223, and 806-790-6236.
