Amarillo appeals court denies oral argument request in Leach lawsuit

The Amarillo-based Seventh Court of Appeals will take up former Texas Tech football coach Mike Leach’s defamation lawsuit March 5 — in relative silence.

On Wednesday, Feb. 12, the appellate court denied requests for oral argument from attorneys on both sides of the case.

Man dead after shooting incident with Levelland police

Levelland police believe a man died Thursday, Feb. 13, from a self-inflicted gunshot wound after pulling a gun on two police officers.

According to a release from Levelland Police Chief Toney Cowan, two uniformed officers attempted to serve a warrant on Lloyd Wayne Halbrooks, 44, at a residence in the 1100 block of Fifth Street at about 8 p.m.

After answering the door, Halbrooks reportedly produced a handgun. The officers then took cover and heard a single gunshot from the house, at which point they returned cover fire.

Special prosecutor role isn't new for Sims

Randall Sims, recently named to investigate sexual assault allegations against Lubbock City Attorney Sam Medina, has been a special prosecutor enough times he can’t quickly hit an exact number.

The district attorney for the 47th Judicial District estimated in an interview Friday, Feb. 14, he’s been called in to take over a case such as Medina’s “10 or 12 times” since he was sworn in in 2005. He was elected to the position in 2004.

“I’ve done a few in Plainview,” he said.

Grand jury indicts Slaton man for sexual assault of neighbor's daughter

A Slaton man suspected of grooming a girl to be his wife from her preteen years was indicted Tuesday, Feb. 18, on two sexual assault charges.

The Lubbock County grand jury charged Dale Wray Fulford, 77, with one count each of continuous sexual assault of a child and sexual assault of a child.

Lubbock County Sheriff’s deputies arrested Fulford last week on those charges. He has been in jail since then. Bail on the continuous sexual assault charge was set at $500,000, with a $100,000 bond set on the sexual assault charge.

Lubbock man indicted in aggravated kidnapping

A Lubbock County grand jury indicted an 18-year-old man on an aggravated kidnapping charge for allegedly forcing a girl into a car and driving around town while restraining her. The indictment was handed down Tuesday, Feb. 18.

According to court records, Christopher Anderson asked a 14-year-old girl for a date. She turned him down, and he waited near the apartment where her family lives. He grabbed her and forced her into a car, driving while holding her head against the floorboard with one hand.
